LJUBLJANA, May 21, 1992 (STA), PRESS REVIEW FROM SLOVENIA

Ljubljana, 21 May - VEČER; POWER OF THE "PALESTINIAN EFFECT" - It seems that B and H might also become a member of the UNO tomorrow and not only Slovenian and Croatia. Will this only be a symbolic act of condolence, or is there something else behind this, asks Boris Jaušovec in his article. The Austrian ambassador in the UNO Security Council, Mr. Hochenfehler, advised that the General Assembly votes already on Friday, May 22, on the acceptance of Slovenia, Croatia and B and H as members into this international organization. The haste is surprising, as it seemed still at the beginning of the week that Slovenia and Croatia would be accepted as a member no sooner than in one month's time. The dramatic appeal of the Bosnian-Herzegovian foreign minister, Mr. Haris Silajdžić in Washington did not fall on death ears. The USA left the solution of the Yugoslav crises to Europe from the very beginning and, by recognizing the republics, affirmed their decision. In this way the US avoided the theme that they would perform the unpopular role of playing the chief constable of the world once again in the Balkans. The exodus of the Bosnian and Herzegovian refugees, the dying of Sarajevo, Mostar and other societies, the massacres of civilians, where the majority for the victims are Muslims, had to awake the fear of a repetition of Palestine. With the acceptance of BaH into the UNO all possibilities are once again opened, with the request of Sarajevo for military intervention, to the fact that the UNO obligates itself with its rules of conduct to protect the integrity of its members, and up to the foundation of the "European army", of which Mitterand and Kohl held discussions about yesterday. At the end of the article Jaušovec states that Haris Silajdžić speaks of the shame of mankind, which does nothing, while simultaneously forgetting that mankind has allowed itself an infinite number of such shames during this era and throughout history.
