Review of Events in Slovenia and International Activities of Slovenia from November 19 to 25

Ljubljana, 25 November - The parliament ended the November session. Political parties started pre-election campaigns for new mayors and members of municipal councils. Slovenia strengthened diplomatic activities in order to be granted the mandate for the beginning of negotiations for an association agreement with the EU at the EU Council of Ministers' meeing on November 28. In the relations with Italy, which seem to be the principal obstacle to the association agreement, there were no changes this week, apart from some more or less favourable statements. Slovenia started its two-year presidency over the Alps-Adriatic Working Community. In Poznan, Prime Minister Janez Drnovšek discussed with his colleagues from Central and Eastern European countries, members of the CEFTA, the possibilities for the integration of Central and Eastern European countries in the EU. Slovenia became an associate member of the North-Atlantic Assembly (NAA), consultative body to the NATO.
