PRESS REVIEW FROM SLOVENIA
Ljubljana, 27 May - VEČER: SANCTIONS - Mr. Eagleburger's statement that the United States are prepared, regardless of their close cooperation with Europe, to independently intervene in the Balkanian wars confirms speculations, which started during the gulf war, about the new role of the USA in the world. With this he severely rebuked European policies concerning the Yugoslav crisis. The statement implies that only the USA are capable of stopping "the ravaging of the nationalist hordes in Yugoslavia", write Dragica Korade. In Yugoslavia, Eagleburger's statement had a completely different meaning: can American intervention stop the war in BiH and obstruct Milošević's re-election at Sunday's elections? What is presently called Yugoslavia has, after having to face sanctions, only two possibilities: to topple the present regime, or follow the Albanian example and isolate itself completely from the rest of the world. After all the Serbians themselves claim that they are prepared to eat nothing but carrots.
