LJUBLJANA - The 46th general assembly of the Union of EU capitals is to kick off in the spirit of the European Car Free Day. The two-day event, hosted by Ljubljana and featuring representatives of 21 European capitals, will begin at 10 AM with an address by Ljubljana Mayor Danica Simsic and a presentation on climate change by Nicholas Hanley, head of the European Commission's Directorate General for the Environment. NEW YORK, US - FM Dimitrij Rupel is to continue his ten-day visit to the US by taking part in a ministerial breakfast of the Group of Friends of the Alliance of Civilisations, attending a NATO lunch and taking part in a meeting of EU foreign ministers with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Rupel's bilateral meetings for the day will feature his Kyrgyz, Indonesian and Serbian counterparts.
LJUBLJANA - The official campaigning for the local elections is to begin with exactly a month left before the ballot.
TAMPERE, Finland - The two-day informal meeting of EU justice and home affairs ministers - also being attended by Slovenia's ministers Lovro Sturm and Dragutin Mate - is to come to a close. The delay in the expansion of the Schengen border system is topping the agenda of the meeting.
LJUBLJANA - The college of deputy group heads will meet at noon to determine the agenda of September's session of the National Assembly and decide on a coalition request for an extraordinary session to debate the government-sponsored tax reform laws.
LJUBLJANA - The social partners - employers, trade unions and the government - are to continue their negotiations on the changes to the employment relationships act. Labour Minister Janez Drobnic is expected to speak to the press following the meeting, at around 10:20 AM.
LJUBLJANA - Health Minister Andrej Brucan will receive his Mexican counterpart Julio Frenk at 1 PM. The pair are expected to exchange views on health care systems and on cooperation in the World Health Organisation. (STA)

POSTOJNA - A working meeting on regional cooperation in the management of the water resources and the coast and sea shared by Adriatic countries will be held the Karst Research Institute as part of Slovenia's Barcelona Convention presidency activities. Statements for the press, including by Environment Minister Janez Podobnik, are scheduled for 12:30 PM. (STA)
LJUBLJANA - The parliamentary environment and spatial planning committee is to begin a session at 9 AM dedicated to review measures taken by Slovenia in relations to Italy's plans to build a terminal for natural gas imports in the Gulf of Trieste, close to the maritime border with Slovenia.
PORTOROZ - The curtain is to be lowered on the Days of the Slovenian Public Administration, a three-day meeting debating the importance of the government reforms for the public sector and preparations for Slovenia's stint as EU president in the first half of 2008.
MARIBOR - European Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik is to address the participates on the second day of the Danube Rectors Conference. This-year's conference is entitled "The Lisbon Strategy - the Role of Universities and the Competitiveness of the Danube Region". At 9:00 AM.
LJUBLJANA - The Centre for Public Opinion Research at the Ljubljana Faculty for Social Sciences is to present the results of the latest Politbarometer, a survey of public opinion on political affairs. Press conference at 11:30 AM. (STA)

LJUBLJANA - Candidate for Ljubljana mayor France Arhar (independent), who enjoys the backing of three major centre-right parties, is to hold a gathering at noon to mark the official launch of campaigning for next month's local elections.
LJUBLJANA - Candidate for Ljubljana mayor Zoran Jankovic (independent) is to unveil his list for next month's local elections at a press conference scheduled for 11 AM.
LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg - The three-day visit to Luxembourg by a delegation of the parliamentary budget and public finance oversight commission, headed by its chair Milan M. Cvikl, is to end.
