PRESS REVIEW FROM SLOVENIA, JUNE 13, 1992
Ljubljana, 13 June - THE SLOVENEC: THE WORLD KEEPING A WATCHFUL EYE ON OUR DEMOCRACY - Nace Polajnar comments the speech on the Electoral Legislation held in the Socio-political Chamber by Government Representative Zoran Thaller. Mr. Thaller stated that the Foreign Ministry was surprised at how carefully the rest of the world was keeping track of political developments in Slovenia, as also by the detailed knowledge other countries showed of our Constitution. The warning that the elections must be held by the deadline set by the Constitution thus is not only aimed at the amount of readiness for the calling of elections evident in Slovenia, but also is a reminder that the international public will judge the worth of our democracy by no other measures but by the degree of respect we show for the rules we have agreed to ourselves. It would not be superfluous to stress at this point, that the European Council wishes to monitor the first democratic elections in the Republic of Slovenia, before it meets the final decision on accepting Slovenia as a member. Therefore, all discussions on the subject of what could be rectified, or even altered by the elections for the national Assembly can only be an attempt to complicate the passing of the Electoral Legislation and to postpone the elections indefinitely.
