Ljubljana, 7 January - Slovenia became the first of the 2004 EU newcomers to adopt the euro, with the 1 January switch carried out without major glitches. The government meanwhile assessed that two gas terminals, planned to be constructed in Italy's Gulf of Trieste, would have damaging cross-border impact on the environment.
