Trieste Province still without a president; Neofascist riot
Ljubljana, 7 July - At yesterday's session the Regional Council of Trieste failed again to elect a new administration. Yet another disturbance staged by the neofascists ensued when Advisor to the Slovenian Assembly Ivan Peterlin greeted those present at the session in Slovenian. Immediately after this, the Fascists began shouting and pounding on the table and only calmed down when the representative of the Northern League of Klingendrath, who was chairing the session, threatened to adjourn.
The Trieste political scene is also rather turbulent in other respects. The leadership of the Socialist Party is due to meet this afternoon, and Secretary of the Regional Council Alessandro Perelli has already announced his intention to resign. The decision is tied to his party's failure during the last elections, as well as the internal crisis in this and a number of other parties which is hindering the formation of new committees for the regional and community administration. Both assemblies have only one month's time left to form new committees. In the event that they fail, the Government will have to dissolve them and call new elections.
