Delo: The forgotten fishermen
Ljubljana, 10 July - It appears that Slovenian fishermen intend to bring the situation in which they find themselves to the absurd (following the French example). If they succeed in reaching an agreement, and organize themselves, they will stop all traffic on the road at Črni Kal on July 17. The reason for such action is that they are angry with the authorities which are constantly dealing only with the problems of wheat, milk etc., while most of the fishing boats are rotting away by the piers of the small fishing towns, writes Boris Šuligoj in the morning edition of Delo.
The fate of Slovenian fishing is not and cannot be dependent solely on Croatian decisions about fishing in its territorial waters. The problems must be solved in Slovenia regardless of the pretences of the nearest and, formally, friendly former Yugoslav republic. Fishing is not just a question of 119 professional fishermen but also an activity which provides a livelihood for more than 4,000 people in Slovenia, adds Šuligoj.
