Delo: Back to Square One

Ljubljana, 17 July - The law on elections to the State Chamber failed to get through all three Assembly chambers. So we are back at the beginning for the adoption of a new voting system and in a much graver crisis that at the time around New Year, when the Demos coalition disintegrated and proposed that elections should be held as soon as possible, according to Jana Taškar in the Theme of the Day in the morning edition of Delo.
There is no logical explanation for such a decision in the parliament. A month ago, the drafts of the law proposed by the constitutional commission were supported by more than two thirds of the delegates. But just before the passing of the law, there was an avalanche of supplements which would change the agreed electoral system considerably. And so negotiations loomed on the horizon, but were actually blackmail, continues Ms.Taškar, stating: "The constitutional law, according to which the elections should take place this year, is still in force. The question is how we will implement this law since in parliament the narrow-minded interests of individual parties prevail and this development is at the mercy of highly stressed individuals and leaves no room for compromises. But elections do not exist simply for political parties, they serve to express the political will of the voters."
