Ljubljana, 6 October - The government adopted the 2008 supplementary budget and the 2009 budget bill, which reduce the budget deficit to 0.6% and 0.3% of GDP respectively. This was just the start of a flurry of economic news which were however pushed to the background by news that Prime Minister Janez Jansa wrote what would turn out to be a widely reported letter to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, urging the EU to give Serbia candidate country status as soon as possible. Meanwhile, parties started stepping up pressure on Croatia, which insists on implementing an ecological and fisheries zone in the Adriatic for EU member states despite opposition from Slovenia and Italy.
