SCHENGEN: Slovenian Steps towards Schengen Zone

Ljubljana, 13 November - Joining the EU on 1 May 2004, Slovenia committed itself to fully implement the Schengen regulations on border security. Despite this, police controls at its borders with the other member states were not removed immediately as Slovenia first had to meet a number of security conditions at its border with Croatia, which became an external EU border. After over three years of work on beefing up security and implementing the Schengen Information System, Slovenia is due to enter the Schengen zone on 21 December.
