With President Kučan visiting Pope John Paul II the Republic of Slovenia and the Vatican confirmed relations on the highest level, established on 13 January 1992 when the Holy See recognized the independent and sovereign state of Slovenia. The foreign ministers of Slovenia and Italy, Lojze Peterle and Emilio Colombo, cut the ribbon at the Neblo local border crossing in the Goriška Brda hills thus making a new international border crossing. The government nominated Janez Sirše, the former Minister of Tourism in Drnovšek's last government, as director of the Security Intelligence Service, and Mile Šetinc, the LDS deputy, as director of the Office of Information.
