The central events of last week focussed mainly on the privatization law, the teacher's strike, the announcment of stricter Italian control over the border with Slovenia and on measures involving military units. William Donald Schaefer, the Governor of the US state of Maryland, visited Slovenia at the beginning of last week. Hiroshi Nakajima, the Director General of WHO, attended the opening of the WHO office in Ljubljana. Mitja Gaspari, the Minister of Finance, visited the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). The "poverty index" in May reached the disconcerting level of 45%, according to Dagmar Šuster, the President of the Chamber of Economy of Slovenia. The figure is calculated by taking into account inflation and unemployment rates.
