Slovenia Will Directly Apply for Full EU Membership if Necessary

During a discussion in the National Assembly devoted to foreign policy and Slovenia's strategy, Slovene Premier Janez Drnovšek on Tuesday said that Slovenia has always been directed towards the European Union (EU) and is ready to accept European rules of the game. If Italy does not stop demanding a bilateral agreement as a condition for an associate membership of Slovenia in the EU, Slovenia will apply directly for a full membership in the EU. With regard to this, Slovenia's position would according to Drnovšek improve if it accepted guidelines of its foreign policy and standpoints and conclusions on the relations with the EU, Italy and the NATO, submitted by the Government to the Parliament at the Tuesday's emergency session.
