In the time of Pope John Paul II, the Head of the Roman Catholic Church and the supreme representative of Vatican, the Holy See officially recognized sovereign Slovenia on 13 January 1992, established diplomatic relations with Ljubljana on 8 February 1992 and recognized on 19 February 1993 the independence of the Slovene Episcopal Conference established on 20 June 1983 within the then Yugoslav Episcopal Conference. On 24 June 1992 Vatican appointed papal nuncio to Slovenia, the post currently held by monsignor Edmond Farhat.
