President Borut Pahor addressed the General Debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, talking about peace, climate change and multilateralism. He underlined that Slovenia was well-placed to be a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2024-2025.

President Borut Pahor will recall Tone Kajzer, Slovenia's ambassador to the US, after being urged to do so by the government due to an internal cable that Kajzer leaked to opposition SDS leader Janez Janša. The ambassador is expected to return to Ljubljana by the end of the month but will remain with the Foreign Ministry.

The council of the Left on Wednesday picked MP Miha Kordiš to run as the coalition party's candidate for president in the 23 October election. The Left will thus not back a joint coalition candidate.

Slovenian doctors have announced a general strike starting on 19 October unless the government concedes to their long-standing demand that they be excluded from the uniform pay system in the public sector and create a separate pay system for the profession.

Slovenia has received this week 100,800 doses of the Pfizer vaccine adapted to the original coronavirus variant and the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-lineages of the Omicron variant, the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) has told the STA. BA.5 is currently the prevalent sub-variant in Slovenia.

Lawyer Nataša Pirc Musar officially joined the presidential race on Wednesday by submitting more than 5,000 voter signatures. She stressed she was joining the race without the burden of party membership, past or present, and with more than 25 years of experience in the fight for human rights, and the rule of law.

Anže Logar, an MP for the opposition Democrats (SDS) and former foreign minister, filed his candidacy for the 23 October presidential election on Wednesday. He filed it with the support of 5,000 voter signatures, which makes him an independent candidate, while his bid was also endorsed by the SDS.

Slovenia is doing everything it can to be elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2024-2025, Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said as she spoke to reporters at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

Economy Minister Matjaž Han is starting a two-day visit to Brussels on Wednesday, where he will discuss measures with several EU commissioners to fight high energy prices alongside the EU's strategic autonomy and ways of making the Union resilient to new crises.
