150th Anniversary of Slovene Railways: President Kučan Delivers Speech

Slovenia celebrates the 150th anniversary of its railways, remembering the day when 150 years ago the first train from Graz, Austria, arrived in Celje, central-east Slovenia. Slovene President Milan Kučan said in his speech at the central celebration in Celje Saturday that the railway has played an important role in creating Slovene history as it brought technological, economic and industrial development to the nation. "New, progressive ideas arrived; the trade union movement began, the awareness of social justice, workers' rights and solidarity grew up, and a modern national identity took shape," President Kučan said.
