Multiple runs for children are scheduled on Saturday as an introduction to the main event on Sunday that will feature almost 20,000 runners braving the 10km, 21km and 42km races.

Those more attracted to hiking have a selection of hikes around the country on offer throughout the weekend, including the picturesque and informative trek tracing the front lines of the WWI Isonzo Front on Sunday.

Routes of 10 or 14 kilometres that also veer into Italy start at the school in the village of Brestovica.

Another popular autumn hike is the walk up to the hostel on Mount Zelenica, elevation 1,536 metres, in memory of children and teachers killed in an avalanche in 1977. The gathering place for the holiday trek on Monday is Creina Hotel in Kranj.
