MEPs acknowledge improvements in Slovenia, lament delays

The European Parliament conducted on Wednesday a debate on fundamental rights and the rule of law in Slovenia. MEPs acknowledged there have been positive steps made recently, but they also criticised the government for delays, in particular in the appointment of European delegated prosecutors.

Changes to appointment of EPPO prosecutors proposed

The Justice Ministry has put forward amendments to the act on the public prosecution that would give the government greater say in the appointment of Slovenian prosecutors delegated to the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), a move that comes on the same day that Slovenia's two prosecutors received full five-year terms.

Janša and Morawiecki note similar views on border protection

Hosting his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki on Wednesday, Prime Minister Janez Janša pledged Slovenia's support for Poland in light of the migrant crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. He said the EU should fund all measures to protect the bloc's external borders. Morawiecki said Slovenia and Poland shared views on security.

EU Commission, prosecutors welcome appointment of Slovenian EDPs

Prosecutors Tanja Frank Eler and Matej Oštir have welcomed the European Public Prosecutor's Office's (EPPO) decision to appoint them as full-fledged European delegated prosecutors from Slovenia. Now they want to focus on investigating and prosecuting fraud against the EU budget. The EU Commission has also welcomed the two appointments.

Falling trend continues as 3,144 new infections recorded on Tuesday

The number of new coronavirus infections was down both in daily and weekly comparisons in Slovenia on Tuesday, as 3,144 people tested positive in what is a confirmation of a falling trend, but the situation in hospitals remains alarming. Another 11 patients died, the government has said.
