Slovenian picked by Denver Nuggets in NBA draft
New York, 23 June - The NBA team Denver Nuggets picked 20-year-old Slovenian forward Vlatko Čančar, currently a member of the Serbian team Mega Leks, in Friday's draft.
The 49th pick in the second round of the draft, Čančar will probably be left to continue playing professionally in Europe for a year or two, so that Denver can see how he develops.
The Koper native has played professionally in Europe since signing in 2015 a five year contract with Slovenian club Union Olimpija.
Čančar is the 11th Slovenian player to be drafted to the NBA, but it has been eight years since the last Slovenian, Goran Dragić, joined an NBA team.
Three Slovenians currently play in the NBA: Dragić for the Miami Heat, Saša Vujačić for the New York Knicks and Beno Udrih for the Detroit Pistons.
