All about cycling this week in amateur sports
Škofja Loka/Dobrovnik, 12 July - Recreational events of note taking place this week are all about cycling, as you can pick between a race across the Stari vrh hill above Škofja Loka in central Slovenia and a 24-hour road ultra-marathon starting in Dobrovnik in the far north-east of the country.
The 17th Ascent to Stari vrh on Saturday will take the participants from the Poljane Sora Valley to the Selca Valley over the ski resort on the hill.
The route that ascends for 650 metres can serve as excellent training for cyclists before the ascents to Mangartsko sedlo pass in August and the Vršič pass in September, the organisers say.
Slo24ultra, taking place on the same day, is meanwhile the first cycling ultra-marathon in the country, intended for all who want to test their endurance and see how many kilometres they can cover in 24 hours.
The event will be organised for individual competitors and four-member teams (men, women and mixed teams), and will also include a shorter, 12-hour version.
"It doesn't matter how many times you will make a stop, but we recommend short stops, because the clock will continue ticking", the organisers say.
