Triathlon lovers go to Bohinj, cyclists to Kranj
Bohinj/Kranj, 23 August - Recreation enthusiasts will be able to test themselves this week in a gruelling triathlon starting on Lake Bohinj or a stage bicycle race around Kranj which invites amateur cyclists to feel the thrill of great races like the Tour de France.
The 31st Ironman Triathlon on Saturday consists of eight kilometres of canoeing on Slovenia's largest lake, 16 kilometres of mountain biking and an eight-kilometre run. A separate relay competition will also be held.
"It is one of the oldest extreme sports events in Slovenia. Last year we celebrated the 30th anniversary and we are courageously going forward," the organisers say.
Rekreatur 2017, which combines the feel of stage races and tourist and recreational cycling, will meanwhile start with a four-kilometre time trial on Tuesday, followed by three daily stages, all of them starting and finishing in Kranj, and measuring a total of 250 km.
"Would you like to experience the charm of stage cycling like the Tour de France or Giro d'Italia, but you have not trained enough for them? Are you too old or you simply don't want to hop on a bike?", the organisers say in the invitation.
A somewhat less demanding triathlon will meanwhile take place in the Kodeljevo sports park in Ljubljana on Sunday.
Sponsored by telecoms operator Telemach, the 3rd Ljubljana Triathlon this year will also bring a challenge for the youngest competitors (born in 2010 or younger) and a team competition of three competitors who must complete the event together.
Other recreational events of note this week include an off-road running competition taking place on Saturday as part of the Špas na vas festival of culinary art, music and games in Javoršica near Moravče in central Slovenia.
Špas'n'run is a 6.5-km run taking the competitors across meadows, forests and mountain paths, concluding with a 35-metre slope of a ski jumping hill. "The interesting challenge will be followed by a wild party," the organisers promise.
