Ljubljana, 19 August - JANŠA/RESPONSE
Janez Janša, the Minister of Defence, gave a public reply to a report from the Prosecutor's Office at the Basic Court of Maribor. (In its Tuesday report the Office explained why Janša was invited as a witness to the hearing concerning the discovery of weapons at Maribor Airport and at the same time called for the preservation of an independent judiciary). Janša also responded to statements made by the Maribor magistrate and to statements made at yesterday's press conference by Miha Kozinc, the Minster of Justice. Kozinc expressed his support for the Maribor Judges' Assembly and for its call for the independent function of judicial bodies. In his public statement Janša accused the so called "Udba - mafia" of being responsible for the Maribor arms affair. Janša writes that the prosecutor is showing most concern for how the arms were discovered but that it is evident from all the documents pertaining to the preliminary investigation that the discovery was made in a completely legal manner.
