Graphic Arts Biennial breaks with tradition of curated shows

Ljubljana, 5 December - It was a break with tradition for the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts, which ran between June and November, as the organisers decided to put an end to curated shows and instead opted for inviting artists to create works based on their interpretation of the poem Birth as Criterion by Jurij Detela.

27 artists from 12 countries were put on display at the International Graphic Art Centre (MGLC) and Švicarija, a cultural hotspot located in Ljubljana's Tivoli Park which opened in May after an almost EUR 6m facelift. This year, Guatemalan artist Alejandro Paz received the Grand Prix for Hypodermic, a work that juxtaposes layers of removed paint from the MGLC galleries with partial images of Guatemalan prisoners' tattoos.
