Weekly Review of Slovene economy from 6 through 11 January

Ljubljana, 11 January - The first working week of this year was characterized by the removal of the damage caused by snow and sleet to electricity and telephone lines in forests. Numerous households in Slovenia were for several days without electricity (50.000 households in the regions of Notranjsko, Gorenjsko and Kočevsko and the Upper River Soča Region were without electricity on 5 January). The supply of sufficient amount of electricity was additionally aggravated by a mechanical defect on the isolation valve in the Krško Nuclear Power Plant. The plant automatically stopped on 1 January and was re-connected to the network on 8 January. On account of bad weather, disrupted transmission lines and the defect in Krško, Slovenia had to import about one third of the necessary electricity in the first two days of last week or nine million kilowatt hours per day.
