A hundred cheeses at first Slovenian cheese festival
Brdo pri Kranju, 1 October - There will be over 100 farmstead cheeses to chose from as 35 Slovenian cheesemakers put their wares on show at the first ever festival of Slovenian cheese at Brdo pri Kranju estate on Tuesday.
The festival will feature not just cheese tasting but also culinary workshops.
It will mark the 20th anniversary of the Association of Farmstead Cheesemakers and is meant to show how far the art of making cheese has come since farmers first got organised in the 1990s.
"The selection is so wide we need promotion and an exhibition for consumers as well as providers of catering services," the head of the association, Milan Brence, told the press this week.
He said even large producers - which will be featured along with farmers - have realized over the years it is necessary to lift the quality of cheese to a higher level. But this takes time.
"Twenty years is not yet tradition in cheesemaking, tradition starts when the new generation takes over. Youths are taking over responsibly, but this takes a few years," he said.
