In Ptuj, being unpronounceable a chance to stand out

Ptuj, 6 October - Ptuj, Slovenia's oldest city, made headlines recently by emerging at the top of Daily Mail rankings of place names that are most difficult for British tourists to pronounce. Now, the city has decided to make this an asset.

A promotional video teaching foreign visitors how to pronounce the name of their city has been shot featuring vistas of the city where locals old and young emphatically pronounce the name.

It has been published on Youtube and Facebook and has already clocked up several thousand views.

Katja Ertl of the Ptuj tourism office says the decision to shoot the video was spontaneous.

"We've noticed ourselves that not only British but many other foreign guests pronounce the name of our city in interesting ways," she says.

The video is accompanied by a prize game. The winner will get a weekend for two in a hotel in the old city centre complete with a tour of the city's wine heritage.
