Škof wins Borštnik Ring, Slovenia's top theatre accolade
Maribor, 9 October - Janez Škof, a member of the SNG Ljubljana ensemble who is also a renowned musical performer, has won the 2018 Borštnik Ring, the highest award conferred in Slovenia for theatre acting.
Škof, 57, is a "charismatic actor who uses his inexhaustible energy, strong stage presence, exquisite sense of rhythm and unmistakable comedic instinct to charm spectators," the jury said as it announced the award on Tuesday.
Škof is considered a diverse actor, who is at home in large-scale productions as well as more intimate plays.
His most recent roles include this year's production of Ivan Tavčar's Visoko Chronicles and last year's Bible, the First Attempt, both directed by Jernej Lorenci.
The jury said that Škof was distinguished by "unbelievable ease" and can perform either minimalist or Luddite roles and has played characters that have become part of the popular consciousness and are still remembered two or three decades later.
"At the same time, he has preserved and expanded the freshness of his acting; as an actor he is still curious, seeking and playful," the jury said.
Škof will receive the award at the close of the Maribor Theatre Festival, which runs from 15 to 28 October.
