Slovenia braces for heavy rainfall
Ljubljana, 26 October - Slovenia expects to see some rough weather in the coming days with heavy rainfall in parts of the country and strong gusts of wind. A month's worth of rain is forecast to fall between Sunday and Monday.
The Civil Protection and Disaster Relief Administration has issued a warning due to strong rains and the possibility of flooding in particular in the west, south and central Slovenia.
The voluntary fire brigade in the Ljubljana Vič borough issued a warning via its Twitter account, urging locals to remove fallen leaves and clean up drains to prevent a repeat of the flooding seen four years ago.
Weather forecasters say the developments in the coming few days will be due to the deepening of the cyclone area above western Europe and northern Mediterranean.
Strong winds blowing from the south and south-west over the next few days will be bringing in warm and very humid air mass.
Rain will start on Friday in the hilly parts of western Slovenia, with heavier rain to follow on Saturday in the north-west before spreading throughout the western half of the country on Sunday.
Localised storms with heavy downpours are also possible.
Eastern parts will have mostly dry weather on Saturday and only intermittent showers on Sunday.
Through the period, between 150 and 300 litres of rain per square metre will fall in the west of the country, up to 400 litres in the upper Posočje region, and between 100 and 200 litres in the south and central Slovenia.
