Why Premier Drnovšek's Candidates Fail

Parliamentary committees denied support to as many as six of the 13 candidates heard so far in this week's hearings of ministerial candidates for the government of Liberal Democrats leader Janez Drnovšek. Rather than proving professional inappropriateness of Drnovšek's candidates, this seemingly paradoxical denial of support to a large number of nominees reflects relations between the position and opposition in the Parliament and the parliamentary committees, of which the majority is divided 50-50 between "would be" government parties and their opposition counterparts.
