World champion Garnbret wins World Cup season opener
Bern, 7 April - Slovenia's Janja Garnbret, the world's leading sport climber, won the World Cup bouldering event in Meiringen, Switzerland on Saturday, in what is her 20th World Cup win. Japan's Akiyo Noguchi placed second and Great Britain's Shauna Coxsey third.
"I was rather frustrated on the first boulder, then I said to myself I should just enjoy the next three, and the race unfolded wonderfully," Garnbret said last evening.
Garnbret, 20, was crowned bouldering champion at the Climbing World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria, last September, also taking gold in combined and silver in lead.
She is also the overall Climbing World Cup winner in the women's lead discipline, which the athlete also aims at in bouldering.
Slovenia is also looking forward to the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games next year, when sport climbing makes its Olympic debut.
