Three Referendum Motions on the Restitution of Forests to the Church and Big Landowners

The restitution of land and forests in the process of denationalization has been frozen under an act adopted by the parliament, but only until this July. In the mean time the National Assembly is expected to regulate contentious issues related to the restitution of large estates more closely by amending the Law on Denationalization, i.e. the law regulating the restitution of the nationalized private property after WW II. There emerged three motions at the end of February that propose the manner and the extent of the restitution should be decided upon by the citizens at a referendum. The biggest claimants in case of forests are the Roman Catholic Church, several foreign and some Slovene large-estate owners.
