Fate of Government's Package of Economic Measures in Hands of Legislators

Ljubljana, 19 April - TOPIC/WEEK/ECONOMY
Slovene government has prepared a package of economic measures, which are to be passed through a fast-track procedure by the National Assembly next week. Since Slovenia has not adopted the 1997 national budget yet and since the decree on temporary financing adopted in December 1996 does not allow for sufficient funds to carry out most urgent tasks in some fields, the government proposed a special law in the package to provide funds in the period of temporary financing in 1997. The package includes a proposal to increase gross salaries' tax threshold and to introduce tax on new cars instead. The National Assembly is to adopt through a fast-track procedure also a law on the conclusion of privatization and support plans to capitalize Slovene Export Company and to turn the Development Fund into Slovene Development Company.
