Review of Events During First Days of the European Cultural Month Ljubljana 1997 (from May 15 through 19)

After Krakow, Budapest, Graz, Nicosia and St. Petersburg hosted European Months of Culture in years 1992 to 1996, the European Month of Culture 1997 officially opened in Ljubljana's Cankarjev dom cultural centre on 15 May with a scenic oratorio conducted by Marko Letonja and featuring the Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra, musical group Laibach, the Academic Choir Tone Tomšič, soprano Norina Radovan and actors Iva Zupančič and Jurij Souček. Speaking at the opening ceremony were President and honorary sponsor of the European Cultural Month, Milan Kučan, Estonia's President Lennard Meri, who was on a visit to Slovenia, and mayor of Ljubljana, Dimitrij Rupel
