Nedelo Poll: Three Quarters for the Right to Abortion

Over three quarters of Slovenes (75.6 percent) believe the constitution should grant women the right to artificially terminate pregnancy, according to a newspaper Nedelo public opinion poll. Only a tenth (10.2 percent) were against the right, while five percent said women should have this right in exceptional cases, when pregnancy resulted from a rape or could endanger the mother's life; 9.1 percent of respondents had no opinion on the issue. The poll was provoked by a statement by Archbishop Franc Rode who said that article 55 of the constitution which grants parents the right to free choice of having children was shameful.
