It is not clear what exactly Slovene Metropolitan Franc Rode's intention was when he embarked on polemics about abortion, constitution and sex. He certainly did not just aim to appeal to a guilty conscience of his audience. Yet, it is difficult to say what else he could have on his mind. He can not bring about a change of the constitution because a two-third majority is required to do so. Moreover, opinion polls have revealed that the general public is not favourably disposed to archbishop's new ideas. On that account, legislators will not be moved by his suggestion that the article giving the right to citizens to freely decide whether to bear children is "a disgrace" for Slovenia, the Tuesday issue of Večer writes.
