Monthly Review of Slovenia's International Activities in September 1997
Ljubljana, 6 October - REVIEW/MONTHLY
Former and Slovenia's first ambassador in Bonn, Boris Frlec became Slovenia's new foreign minister in end-September. On 17 September, Prime Minister Janez Drnovšek nominated him foreign minister because of Frlec's "rich diplomatic, economic and political experience". In a 57-23 vote on 25 September the Parliament confirmed Frlec's appointment and he was sworn in on the same day. The newly-appointed foreign minister (a member of Drnovšek's Liberal Democracy of Slovenia - LDS) said that "one of the most important tasks" to be carried out by the Slovene foreign policy is "definitively" Slovenia's full EU membership. However, a path to the EU will be "neither easy not fast".
