Visits by Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro in Croatia and Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini in Belgrade prove that Italy wants to play on several political chessboards in the Balkans. While Rome is giving assurances to Croatia through Scalfaro that it wants to be its partner and sponsor in joining the European Union, Dini's visit in Belgrade shows that it also wants to preserve relations and dialogue with Belgrade, Trieste-based Slovene language newspaper Primorski dnevnik writes on Thursday.
