The Consulate General hosted the celebrations last weekend at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. More than 1,300 people attended, Consul General Alenka Jerak said.

On Friday, an excursion presenting beekeeping was organised for students from 14 primary schools and high schools. A total of 800 students, teachers, mentors and parents attended.

The local beekeepers' association helped organise the events, where the Slovenian tradition of beekeeping as well as honey and wax products were presented. An exhibition put on by the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association stressed the importance of World Bee Day and bees in general.

On Saturday, all this was presented to the wider public. Visitors also had an opportunity to attend various lectures.

In New York, Slovenia's Ambassador to the UN Boštjan Malovrh and his wife hosted a reception at their residence dedicated to young beekeepers and the role of beekeeping in promoting the resilience of local communities.

At the event, attended by representatives of 45 UN member states and UN agencies, young beekeeper from Bronx Alaura Flynn presented her work and her personal story.

Visitors were able to taste Slovenian honey from Begunje.

Guangzhou Qu, director of the FAO Liaison Office in New York, and the deputy director of the World Food Programme's New York division, Paul Skoczylas, both stressed the importance of beekeeping and bees.

Malovrh said in his address that beekeeping is a sustainable activity that can contribute to economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental management.
