Review of the Slovenian Press

Ljubljana, 7 October - Under the headline "Policemen on the Streets", Delo discusses the reasons for the discontent expressed by the strikers, posing the question of whether the matter is simply higher wages, or whether the strike is in any way meant to emphasize the tragedy of the workers who are literally losing their factories. The Delo commentary asks whether or not the police are justified in striking. Some countries do not allow such strikes, because it is the police force's duty to protect citizens and their property, and not to strike. However, the author goes on to say that in view of the ongoing democratic processes in Slovenian society, there is nothing wrong in expressing discontent in this way, under condition that a minimum level of security be maintained. For this reason, it would be unacceptable if the strikers were to continue hindering the free flow of traffic - particularly at the border crossings - without prior assent.
