WWII anniversary ceremony told "evil sowers" rising again

DRAŽGOŠE - A large crowd gathered in the village of Dražgoše in the northwest of the country to mark the 83rd anniversary of a WWII battle. The keynote speaker, National Assembly President Urška Klakočar Zupančič described the Battle of Dražgoše as a symbol resistance against terror, drawing parallels to the challenges today. "We can again observe with concern the rise of cowards who sow intolerance and fear of anything that does not fit in with their greed to take control of society and the limited natural resources of our planet. Once again ... we are witnessing crimes against humanity and acts of genocide," she said.

Slovenia chairing 15th Assembly of International Renewable Energy Agency

ABU DHABI, UAE - Slovenia is presiding the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) during the 15th session taking place in Abu Dhabi on Sunday and Monday in what is seen as an important role for the country in international energy diplomacy. The agency brings together 170 member states and the European Union. The assembly session is important for shaping a common vision for the future of energy at the global level, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Ministry said.

Two Albanians block border traffic over denied entry

ILIRSKA BISTRICA - Two Albanian nationals blocked traffic into Slovenia at the Starod border crossing with Croatia with their vehicles on Tuesday after being denied entry to the country. The incident, whose footage has gone viral, will be examined by a fact-finding commission. The Koper Police Department said police officers denied the pair the right of entry after examining their documents and finding they did not meet the conditions. After the two paid the fines for traffic and border violations and obtained additional documents, the police allowed them to enter.

Golovec observatory obtains 80cm telescope

LJUBLJANA - The Astronomical Observatory on the Golovec hill overlooking Ljubljana has acquired a new, 80-centimetre telescope, the largest yet in the country. The observatory is operated by the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, which is now collecting proposals from the public to find a name for the new AZ800 telescope. The faculty used funds acquired in a public call and its own funds to pay for the EUR 200,000 telescope, which replaces a 71cm telescope called Vega.

Božidar Jakac Gallery to mark 50th anniversary

Kostanjevica na Krki - Housed in a former monastery on the edge of the island town of Kostanjevica na Krki (SE), the Božidar Jakac Gallery is planning an extensive programme of events this year, including an exhibition in September marking the 50th anniversary of its precursor. In July, the gallery will host the biennial Forma Viva workshop, arguably the world's oldest still running international sculpture symposium. This year the gallery will also launch renovation of its northwestern wing and the former monastery garden.
