FM says Slovenia will continue to strengthen dialogue, cooperation with US

LJUBLJANA - Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon believes the EU must focus on its resilience and the recovery of its economy as it faces challenges brought on by the return of US President Donald Trump. The US is an important strategic partner and Slovenia must strengthen dialogue and cooperation with it, she told the STA in an interview. She also said that Slovenia alongside the rest of the EU will have to increase its defence spending considering the situation in its neighbourhood has been deteriorating. Moreover, the EU should become much more involved and more confident in talks about the future political architecture in the Middle East.

Crowd rallies in Ljubljana in support of Serbian student protests

LJUBLJANA - Several hundred people gathered in front of the Serbian embassy in Ljubljana in support for the anti-government protests in Serbia. Students in Serbia have been protesting for over two months, rallying against impunity for those responsible for the collapse of a part of the Novi Sad train station that killed 15 people last year. The protest was organised by SviĆe a youth group organising civil disobedience campaigns around the world.

State pays out EUR 44,000 to Janša

LJUBLJANA - Former Prime Minister Janez Janša received nearly EUR 44,000 in compensation on Thursday following a partial court decision in a lawsuit he brought against the state after he was initially found guilty and sent to prison for his alleged role in the Patria military deal in the early 2000s. Janša served some six months of his two-year prison sentence in the Patria case in the second half of 2014 before a retrial was ordered. However, the case became statute barred and Janša is suing the state for EUR 900,000.

Talum to launch EUR 40m investment by end of year

KIDRIČEVO - Talum, the Kidričevo-based aluminium products maker, expects to launch its new slugs production in full by the end of the year. The group is the leading maker of slugs in the world, with demand for this intermediate good used to make cans and tubes growing consistently. Some 80% of the new equipment in the EUR 40 million project has been running since October, with an additional 100 people working in the slugs production. By the end of 2027 the group expects the slug production to increase from 55,000 tonnes to 80,000 tonnes annually. Meanwhile, unaudited results for last year show Talum generated EUR 364 million in revenue and EUR 2 million in profit.

Bormolini and Miki win Rogla snowboard world cup events

ROGLA - The overall leaders in snowboarding world cup Maurizio Bormolini of Italy and Tsubaki Miki of Japan won the men's and women's parallel giant slalom events in Rogla. In men's competition, second place went to German Elias Huber, while Italian Aaron March was third. In the women's competition, second place went to Sabine Payer of Austria and the third to Italian Elise Caffont. The best Slovenian among men was Tim Mastnak in fifth, while Gloria Kotnik finished 19th among women.
