Šimic's photograph depicts a group of shamans in La Paz in Bolivia, where shamans play an important role in traditional culture. Local architecture in bright colours can be seen in the background of the photograph.

The open competition, held for the 18th year in a row, shows how an individual photograph can capture a single moment and tell a bigger story at the same time, the organisers wrote in the press release.

In total, more than 419,000 photographs from more than 200 countries and territories were submitted for the Sony World Photography Awards, which also feature professional, student and youth competitions.

A selection of winning and shortlisted photographs will be exhibited at the Somerset House gallery in London from 17 April to 5 May and later at other venues. The overall winner of the open competition will be announced on 16 April at the opening of the exhibition.
