Impeachment - Test for the Government

Ljubljana, 20 May - IMPEACHMENT/CHRONOLOGY
Central home affairs event this week, which will certainly attract a lot of public attention, will be the parliamentary debate on the Social Democratic Party (SDS) motion of impeachment of Prime Minister Janez in the Constitutional Court over the alleged breach of the Constitution and statutes in the process of signing the disputed secret security agreement between Slovenia and Israel three years ago. This is the second impeachment motion since 1992, when Drnovšek was first appointed head of government. The first motion against the premier was started on 22 November 1994 by a group of 17 opposition parliament members at the initiative of the Slovene People's Party (SLS) - now a coalition partner to the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS) - because of allegedly unconstitutional and illegal promises to Italy regarding the rights of foreigners to real estate in Slovenia. The motion was rejected by the National Assembly in January 1995 with a strong majority of votes.
