Milan Kucan: Slovenia in Substantially New Position On Seventh Anniversary

Ljubljana, 23 June - KUCAN/ANNIVERSARY/STATEHOOD
President Milan Kucan said Tuesday at the Slovene National Day and the seventh anniversary of independence that seven years after becoming a sovereign state Slovenia was in a substantially different position. "What I have in mind is the fact that this year - the seventh year of existence of independent Slovenia - the talks started for full membership in the European Union. The EU as one of the nation's key strategic commitments is no longer an abstract and distant goal. It is a concrete process that will judge the maturity of the Slovene state and define our actions in the future", President Kucan said at the traditional news conference for Slovene and foreign journalists marking the seventh anniversary of national independence.
