Foreign Minister Boris Frlec was on an official visit in Albania early in the week and gave his regular monthly news conference to comment on the activities of Slovene diplomacy in 1998. He also announced Slovenia and its foreign ministry would pursue very similar priorities to those in 1998 next year. Premier Janez Drnovsek appealed on parliamentary party leaders to exercise tolerance in resolving the outstanding issues with neighbouring Croatia, pointing out the border issue as the most critical one. The National Security Council headed by Premier Drnovsek also backed the government interest for closer ties with the Yugoslav republic of Montenegro. An important event for Slovenia occurred on 21 December in Brussels when the Council and the European Commission confirmed that all procedures for the enforcement of the Europe Agreement were over.
