EU and Slovenia in the week from 26 December to 1 January

Ljubljana, 3 January - Final days of 1998 and the first day of the new year were marked by a small number of events of outstanding significance in Slovenia. Eleven member states of the European Union introduced the single currency on 1 January, the same day that Germany took over presidency of the Union. In Slovenia, news from Brussels boomed shortly before the New Year about Austria's intentions to assume the rights of the cradle of breed of the Lipizzaner horses.
