Delo: Haider Half Way into the Saddle
Ljubljana, 8 March - PRESS/AUSTRIA/ELECTION
It has happened for the first time in the history of the second Republic of Austria that a party originating in the liberal political tradition with German nationalism as a tactical pillar introduced by the head of the Freedom Party, Joerg Haider, after he took over the leadership in 1986, became the strongest political group in Carinthia. The entire weather outlook for Austria depends upon it whether the other two parliamentary parties stick to their pledge not to elect Haider Carinthia's Governor General whatsoever. For Carinthia - for Slovenes in it, for the principle of multiculturalism and multilingualism, for economic, political relations with Slovenia and probably even for the 2006 Olympic Games - Sunday's victory of the rightist populist party started a trend directed away from modern European currents where multilingualism is one of unavoidable preconditions for everything else, Delo comments on Monday.
