Schmitt Sets New Record, Wins in Planica

German athlete Martin Schmitt won the first ski flying match for the World Championship in Planica on Friday. After going as far as 219 meters falling at landing in the first series, he jumped 214.5 meters in the second series, setting a new unofficial world record. The Japanese Kazujoshi Funaki (190.5, 206.5 meters) was second, and Germany's Christopf Duffner (202.5, 206.0 meters) third.
