Weekly Review of Events in Slovenia from 8 through 14 May
Ljubljana, 15 May - SLOVENIA/REVIEW/WEEKLY
President Milan Kucan visited Macedonia to express Slovene support to the country and familiarise himself with Macedonia's humanitarian needs. Late in the week, he attended the 6th informal meeting of Central European heads of state in the Ukrainian capital of Lvov which focused on the Kosovo crisis. Defence Minister Franci Demsar attended the WEU session in Bremen that chiefly dealt with a future European defence system. State minister in Germany's Foreign Ministry, Guenther Verheugen, was on a two-day visit in Slovenia, meeting all political leaders of the country. In the talks, Slovene officials supported the Germany-proposed stability pact for South East Europe, but said Slovenia must not be positioned in the pact as an element of the crisis or a country needing help, but as a partner in the peace efforts. The government passed position papers for four areas subject to negotiations with the EU.
